St. John the Evangelist School Celebrates the 100th Day of School

Monday, February 13, 2012 marked the 100th Day of School for St. John the Evangelist School students.  The 100th Day of School offers a day for children to learn as well as have fun.  St. John the Evangelist “Little School” Kindergarten and First Grade students participated in many activities throughout the day that commemorated their ability to count to 100 in various ways.  For the celebration, students collected 100 items of various objects, enabling them to put their new skill to the test.  The children collected 100 of their chosen items and set up an exhibit of their items in the classroom for the class to view.  The students participated in special counting activities such as, counting 100 Fruit Loops to make a candy necklace.  Each student also brought in 100 pieces of a snack item – such as chocolate chips, pretzels and crackers and other treats – to combine together for a special 100th day of school snack.  The students learned to count 100 items out by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s and listened to books about the 100th day of school.  The First Graders put together a 100 piece puzzle as a special class project.  The students always look forward to the 100th Day of School and the celebration of their new counting skills.  The students pride themselves on being 100 days smarter, now only 80 more days of school to go!

2012 National Radon Poster Contest

Allison Perry Sullivan, St. John the Evangelist School alumna, class of 1990, encouraged participation in the 2012 National Radon Poster Contest by St. John the Evangelist School students, ages 9-14.  Allison Perry Sullivan is an Environmental Analyst at the State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health, and Bureau of Regulatory Services.  Allison volunteered her time with St. John the Evangelist School students teaching them about radon and radon awareness in their homes, while explaining the exciting opportunity to enter the poster contest participation.  Each student created posters of their own artistic efforts in hopes of seeing their creations featured in the upcoming Connecticut Department of Public Health 2012-2013 calendar.  Allison spent many happy years at St. John the Evangelist School and was delighted to come back and visit with the teachers and students, while educating them on such an important topic.

The posters were entered and reviewed by Kansas State University, in partnership with EPA.  Students from states and tribal nations across the country and all U.S. territories were encouraged to create a poster that raised awareness and encouraged radon testing in every home.  Three winners were chosen from St. John the Evangelist School to be featured in the calendar.  Juliane Brown, Samantha Dassatti and Alexandra Gilland’s artistic creations became part of the important awareness campaign.  St. John the Evangelist School is so proud of our student’s participation and featured winners. A special thank you to Allison Perry Sullivan and her steadfast love of St. John the Evangelist School.
