Knitting Club
The knitting club is an after school activity that began over 5 years ago. It basically started on a fluke. As I was heading outside for afternoon dismissal duty one day, I noticed one of the grandmothers knitting while sitting in her car waiting for her granddaughter. I commented on her beautiful handiwork since I learned how to knit as a child, but clearly not as experienced as she; and she proceeded to tell me how she teaches knitting classes at a town center. A light bulb went off! I asked her if she would be willing to help me teach the students to knit and she agreed. Since that wonderful day, we have had many children, boys and girls, learn how to knit.
After the graduation of her granddaughter, I have been fortunate to have other mothers who have volunteered their time to run the knitting club with me. Over the years the children have produced many wonderful items such as book marks, headbands, scarves, change purses, pocket books, rag dolls, snowball puffs, and wreaths. Lots of bright, creative things! One of the most exciting byproducts of the knitting club is the camaraderie of the students. Since students in all grades are welcomed into the club, I am thrilled that I have many experienced knitters who can help the new ones learn how to knit. It is so rewarding for me to see the smiles on the faces of the new knitters when they get the hang of the hand movements for knitting.
I would like to thank all of the parents, relatives and friends of St John School who have donated yarn, needles and their time to help the students learn a skill that will give them enjoyment for years to come! Mrs. Susan Ouellette
