Basketball

St. John the Evangelist School has many great sports teams.  These programs have been put into action by teachers, staff and parents at our school who realize that the well being of our students does not stop at text book education, but continues on with education of health and fitness.  We at St. John the Evangelist School encourage all students to be involved with an after school activity, such as basketball.  No student is ever turned away from participating on the team.  Every student who tries out for the team is able to play, as long as they have the ability to try their best and display a positive and encouraging attitude.

ST. JOHN’S BOYS’ JV’S WIN HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT

The St. John the Evangelist’s Boys’ JV basketball team won the 24th Annual Sts. Peter and Paul Holiday Tournament, nipping Mount Carmel in the finale, 21-20.  Will Gersky sank two free throws with 40 seconds remaining to lead the Eagles, who trailed 20-17 with a minute and a half remaining.  Gersky was the star of the tournament pouring in 23 points in the Eagles 30-21 semifinal victory over St. Mary's on Saturday, December 10th, 2011, while dominating the boards.  In Sunday's championship game, Gersky led the Eagles with nine points, but the combinded defensive pressure of mike Meier, Kevin Brown, and Ryan Dezzutti helped St. John the Evangelist School keep Mt. Carmel's Willie Gugliemo in check after he had scored the game's first six points.  Callahan Healey dished out four assists and handed Mount Carmel's full-court press in the final.  Tyler Sullivan added six points in the Eagles' championship game victory and was named to the all-tournament team along with Gerski and Jack Phalon, who threw in five points in the last two games.
